How does the Portugal Job Seeker Visa work?
- Are you ready to take the next step in your career and experience life in one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries in Europe? Look no further than the new Portugal Job Seeker Visa.
- This visa allows you to gain access to Portugal for up to 6 months while you search for your dream job. Whether you’re looking to start a new career or take your current one to the next level, this visa is the perfect opportunity for you to experience the Portuguese lifestyle.
- The visa process has been streamlined to make it as simple and easy as possible. The visa will be issued at the Portuguese consulate abroad, giving you the flexibility to begin your job search from anywhere in the world. It has an initial validity of 120 days which can be further extended up to 60 more days, for a total of 180 days, once you are able to secure a valid employment agreement.
The Portuguese Job Seeker Visa grants several benefits:
- Individuals who are approved for the Portuguese Job Seeker Visa can start working as soon as they find a job and will be allowed to apply for the residency permit once a formal employment contract has been signed.
- You will have the possibility of bringing your family with you under family reunification once a residence permit has been obtained.
- You will have the opportunity to live and work in one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries in Europe.
Considerations on the 60 days extension:
The Portugal Job Seeker Visa offers the opportunity for a 60-day extension, allowing you to maximize your chances of finding employment. To request it, you must present proof of registration with the IEFP, I.P., along with a declaration indicating that the conditions of the planned stay are maintained.
Employment agreement must be established during the first 120 days, but no contract needs to be signed.
Failure to find employment or begin the process of requesting a residence permit by the end of the maximum visa validity period will result in the visa holder having to leave the country.

What are the Portuguese Job Seeking Visa requirements?
The requirements for the Portugal Job Seeker Visa are very straightforward:
Necessary documentation: Visa application, criminal record checks, private healthcare, roundtrip flight reservation, passport photos, etc.
Proof that you can sustain yourself by demonstrating at least the sum of 3 guaranteed monthly minimum salary. This requirement can be waived if a Portuguese citizen or a foreign citizen, with a legal residence authorization in Portugal, guarantees food and accommodation for you. Ask us for more information on this.
Individuals must not have any existing entry bans to any EU country in order to be eligible for the Job Seeker Visa.
Conditions on the job search: Applicants are only allowed to search for job opportunities in Portugal and not for jobs in other Schengen countries.
Successful applicants will only be able to enter Portuguese territory once, so it will not be possible to travel abroad during the 180-day time period.
An extension will be granted if an individual is unable to sign an employment contract within the initial timeframe. If no employment agreement has been established within the first 120 days, the individual must leave the country. And, a new Job Seeker visa application can be submitted after a period of one year from the expiration of the previous visa’s validity.
The employment contract has to be formalised throughout the 120-day period in order to request the residency. To do so, you must fulfil the general conditions for granting a temporary residence permit.
